Social Media: Do you really need it?

I’ve always maintained that the only thing worse than not having a Facebook page is having a dusty one. After all, what’s the point in setting up all your social media networks if you don’t have the time and resources to invest in them? As we move forward in 2015, it’s time to take a step back and look at the big picture. Not only is this the year Marty McFly visits us from Back to the Future Part II, but it’s very clear that social media is here to stay. It’s not a trend or a fad, it’s an integral part of life now. Like Emma Stone’s character says in the movie Birdman (which you should see), “There's a whole world out there where people fight to be relevant every day. And you act like it doesn't even exist! Things are happening in a place that you willfully ignore, a place that has already forgotten you. I mean, who are you? You hate bloggers. You make fun of Twitter. You don't even have a Facebook page. You're the one who doesn't exist. You're doing this because you're scared to death, like the rest of us, that you don't matter.” This really resonated with me. It’s so true, you’re somehow not relevant if you’re not on social media. Maybe if your demographic is 70+ this doesn’t quite apply to you, but the majority of businesses out there have a much broader audience. There are over 1.3 billion Facebook users alone - so what better place to capitalize on that potential business?

With so many options out there - Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, LinkedIn, etc. - it’s easy to be confused as to which ones you need the most. So ask yourself this: Where is my audience and where are they active? Once you’ve determined that, you can figure out which social media networks will be the most beneficial to you and your business. It doesn’t stop there though, as I mentioned from the get-go, you have to keep everything updated and relevant.
